Been around since '96; still manages to turn heads, due to the irresistible look the Alpa romeo spider

  • Comes with a cracking range of engines which add up to a typically Italian     exercise in motoring passion.

  • Great to look at, great to listen to, and a pleasure to use.

Though it looks like a slightly less attractive version of its predecessor — as seems mandatory at BMW these days — appearances are deceptive. In its 4.4 litre form the vehicle receives a new V8 engine, gearbox and four-wheel-drive system. There’s a new 3 litre diesel, too, and come the spring a 4.8 litre motor as well. Only the 3 litre petrol engine survives in original form.

BMW has decided to make its newest sport scar noisier. In an automotive world in which designers and engineers spend hundreds of man-years giving car interiors the deathly hush of a funeral parlor, the goal with the

Z4 has been the opposite, with BMW experts trying to pump as much engine noise into the two-seat cabin as possible.

CHRYSLER
PT CRUISER

Pick up the pace with PT Cruiser's high-output 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. It creates 220 horsepower at 5,100 rpm and 245 lb-ft of available peak torque from 2,400 to 4,400 rpm.

This engine is standard on PT Cruiser GT.

To put all that power into motion, choose from a five-speed manual transaxle or an optional four-speed automatic

Crossfire

Designed to be a convertible from the outset

Buffeting is largely kept to a minimum thanks to the glass wind deflector behind the seats Interior space is sacrificed for striking looks

Comes with pretty much everything you could want to have fitted to it. Best gadget has to be the spoiler that pops up automatically at 60mph or whenever you flick the switch

CITROEN
BERLINGO

Citroen has found that a lot of Berlingo buyers like to spec their cars up. The £450 Modutop roof storage system with vent ducting and glass panels is very popular. So is air conditioning at £600.

ABS with EBD is part of the ‘Safety Pack’ at £650. And you’d be silly to begrudge the £60 ‘Comfort Pack’ of seatback tables, front armrest and Modubox shopping trolley.

SAXO

Citroen's going so far as to claim that the new, 125bhp VTS offers 'thrills without the bills'. True? Well, yes and no.

It doesn't thrill like the old Saxo, but it was never really going to. The small old car's agility and poise is rarely matched anywhere in hot-hatchdom these days

The one thing that won over this car for us was the spacious boot. Our previous car we had to bend down to put things in.

NUBRIA

The Nubira was launched in 2003 and is an attractive package for the buyer looking for (almost) care-free ownership for three years, with free servicing, warranty and breakdown cover.

A spacious rear with comfortable seats and lots of legroom. Enough room for three over short distances, or four for longer trips.

Two trims, 1.6 SX and 1.8 CDX. Both are well specked. SX has electric windows, air-con and a chilled glove box. CDX adds climate control and some wood trim. A major omission is a CD player, an option on both models
